The Problem:

Our food system is broken. The 2017 Global Nutrition Report shows that 30% of the food produced around the world is wasted, the food system is responsible for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and one-third of land degradation. According to a 2010 United Nations Report, animal agriculture itself accounts for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, which is higher than the entire transportation sector, and is posing a major risk not only to animal welfare but also the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Meanwhile, on one side of the world children are malnourished and face existential food insecurity, while on the other children as young as five are showing signs of obesity and diabetes through malnutrition in the form of fast food.

The Solution:

While food is the problem, food can also be a solution. The right food choices and systems can nourish people, the planet, and even economies, creating healthy societies and lives worth living. There are new technological developments in farming (e.g. vertical farming, urban hydroponics, aquaponics, zero-waste restaurants, veganic farming, food cooperatives, community gardens) and food products (e.g. cellularly engineered meat, plant-based milks, fungi-based seafood) that inspire hope and promise. We would like to hear from you how you think food can be the solution to the very problems food systems have created.

About Fresh N Lean

At Fresh n’ Lean, we believe that by choosing what to put on our plate, we shape the world around us. We started our company with the commitment to providing fresh, delicious, organic, and plant-based or vegan meals that are good not only for you, but for society and the planet as well. This is why, in addition to serving hundreds of meals a day, we developed our scholarship program. It captures our commitment to education and the belief that young people today have the power to positively impact our broken food system, public health crisis, and the environmental degradation we see today. Change is possible, and it begins with the new generation that will shape the future of food tomorrow.
